I must start my review by stating that Dr. Khan's office staff and nurse were absolutely accommodating and wonderful. The experience with Dr. Khan however, was not as pleasurable. When the nurse, I believe her name was Valerie, came in I thought "Wow, this is the textbook definition of a pediatric specialist." She was comforting, knowledgable, welcoming, and explained everything. My daughter loved her disposition and was taken up with her warm, comforting personality. We moved into the next room where we were to meet with Dr. Khan so she could perform an echocardiogram for our daughter's heart murmur. I will not go into full detail about the visit but I almost felt like Dr. Khan looks down on you. My husband and I are two very well educated parents. Her demeanor was very curt and abrasive. I don't expect Patch Adams to walk in with a clown nose, but you do realize you're a PEDIATRIC cardiologist right? Her bedside manner was less than pleasurable. The only thing she explained at the beginning of our appointment was that we needed to keep our 15 month old as still as possible for about 10-15 minutes. That in and of itself, was going to be a challenge, but we did everything she asked to attempt to distract our daughter. After about 20 minutes, because my daughter was crying a lot, she didn't once comfort us and say "Okay mom and dad, only a few more pictures to go." Instead, she kept saying "I can assure you I'm not hurting her. This doesn't hurt." She remained silent the entire time, which I know she was concentrating, but maybe at the beginning she could have stated I will be taking 60 pictures or so. Instead, this felt like the longest 20-25 minutes and we were preparing for what was going to be relayed to us. After the ultrasound was done, she assured us everything was fine but said she needed to go plug numbers into the computer. My husband and I said "okay" and she looked at us and goes "it's fine, now leave her be." She came back in, started to very quickly go over her innocent heart murmur with us, and again said "it's a normal functioning heart, now leave her be." I felt right then and there I wanted to ask her to stop saying "leave her be." She made me feel like a hypochondriac that just walked in off the street. I was respectful but wanted to let her know, "listen we aren't here because we just felt like it." It was an emotional day so I held back saying anything, until....
Until she asked "is it typical of your daughter to throw a tantrum and cry this much?" I said, "excuse me?" She said she noticed in the home videos we were asked to show on the phone that she yells a lot. Well excuse me doctor, but those home videos you asked us to show to distract her, she was chasing our dog and yelling with excitement, ALSO, we were restraining our 15 month old daughter, for 20 minutes, in a room that was about 105 degrees. This was not a tantrum because she didn't get a toy at Toys R Us. I really, really did not appreciate that question and was taken aback. I explained to her that I am a teacher and I have a degree in childhood development psych- my daughter is 15 months old and can't verbally express her frustration and emotions, so her crying was completely normal. Long story short (I know too late) but God forbid we ever needed to see a pediatric cardiologist again, we would not be returning to Dr. Khan.
